How To Wash Your Face 101

Sure you wash face, but do you know HOW to wash it so you get the best results from each cleansing?  There was a time when I just lathered up a wash cloth, scrubbed my face, rinsed off the soap and I was done. If you’ve had a skin care routine like that since high school, then it’s probably time to rethink your routine.

Not all soaps are created equal. There are a wide variety of choices in facial cleansers as well as for all skin types, too.  The temperature of your water is important, too.  Warm to cool water is your best choice.  Hot water will remove the makeup quicker, yes, but the skin on our face is very thin and sensitive.  Hot water damages the skin easily by rinsing away natural oils.  Without those oils your skin will become dry and dry skin around your eyes and other areas promotes – wrinkles!!!

My favorite cleanser is Dr. Dennis Gross All in One Cleansing Foam and Toner.  I like EZ when it comes to taking off my makeup. This cleanser is for all skin types and after each use it reveals clean, healthy skin by gently toning and removing impurities and makeup. It is hypoallergenic for even the most sensitive skin types and it will leave your skin soft, hydrated and ready for your serums and creams.  The product labeling calls this ‘a 3-in-1 product cleanser/toner/makeup remover) which keeps pores clean and unclogged’ and it’s perfect for contact lens wearers, like me!  It self-adjusts to your skin which can vary with seasons – from a cold winter day in Chicago to a 100 degree day in Dallas.  This cleanser will remove waterproof makeup and sunscreens and eye makeup too, and it doesn’t sting!

Apply the cleanser by just squirting a small amount onto the palm of your hands and spread across your face.  Rinse and pat it dry.   If you want to exfoliate your skin, the wash cloth works great, but I prefer to use a buffing cream once or twice a week.

Gerri Weise makes a great buffing crème in Mint and it’s enriched with Papaya Enzymes.  I have used this product for over 10 years two to three times a week. When my children were young and prone to breakouts this product worked well to control those as well.

Gerri Weise Basic Beauty Concepts is on Facebook or at and Dr. Dennis Gross products are available online at or at Nordstrom or Sephora.

Class dismissed. Time to wash your face!
