Jimmy Days

Anyone that knows me knows I think I have the best hairstylist/colorist in my city.  He has been a part of my life for over 21 years so we share many memories and fun times – besides hair!

Jimmy is actually the person, along with Enrique Starnes-Ortega, Senior Account Executive with Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare, that encouraged me to start my path on beauty blogging several years ago.  Jimmy Moreau is a Color Specialist, Stylist & Make Up Artist at The Crown Salon in Dallas.  My visits with him consist of conversations regarding friends, family or favorite TV shows that we love and then we move on to the the world of beauty – skincare, make-up, and hair.  We have been through so much together but one of the best memories is my first highlighting appointment.  Even though we were watching the weather, it surprised us both that a tornado had touched down in Ft. Worth and was heading our way!  Jimmy remained calm and the bleach, though slow to process, was still quicker than the tornado that followed me home. Ahhh Memories!  LOL

My first visit to Jimmy in 1996 was from a referral from a mom at the high school my daughter attended.  Her hair was beautiful and I had admired it for several years.  So at the concession stand during halftime of a high school football game I walked up to her and told her how much I admired her hair.  And within a week I had my first appointment with Jimmy.  I sat down in the styling chair at Montana’s which happens to be in Texas (go figure!) and Jimmy looked over my color-treated dark permed hair and he said “You can either continue to cover the grey or, you can stop perming your hair. You cannot do both” – and my world, as I knew it, tilted.  But here I am today, with highlighted hair, long, straight, no perm, and little tease, and I love the look.

Bottom line we can all change.  Our hairstyles, our attitude about life and others, our favorite foods and our favorite products. It’s part of life and life is great as long as we don’t sweat the small stuff and that includes frizzy hair!

As you know, I test products all the time through skincare, makeup, and hair.  And I am constantly asking questions.  I recently saw my friend, Pamela Morgan, National Makeup Artist with YSL, who has the amazing job of traveling the world making women beautiful. We were at a recent Trend Show together in May and I text her after she got home.  It was a dreary day in Dallas, but she not only looked fabulous as always, but so did her hair.  “What are you using, I asked??” and she sent me the info I needed.  Being from Los Angeles and living Orlando she said Kendra 25 Hair Spray works the best for humidity.  And now Kendra Hair Spray is part of my hair product drawer, too.

Bottom line listen to your “Jimmy” in your life.  It will show in your hair… and your smile!

Turn Up The Volume – Dream Big

Gosh what a difference a week makes.  I see Sunshine!  It’s amazing how it affects our personality, our outlook on life and oh, did I mention – our hair.  My last blog post discussed INNER beauty and hair health, in the midst of day after day and after week of rain.  Taking care of our inner health with ‘hair vitamins’ is a must but moving on to the ‘outside’ I have found a great line of  hair  products that I just love that really make my hair feel healthy and FULL.  If you don’t like hair full of volume, don’t leave the coffee table just yet.  It’s more fun when all of us are sitting here together.  Right?

Celebrity hair guru Serge Normant has a wonderful hair line, from shampoo and conditioner to products that will create full, drool-worthy hair like the celebrities that visit his salon.  With Serge Normant’s Meta Silk Shampoo and Condition you will see a difference in your hair almost immediately and if you don’t want additional styling products, you will love the feel of your hair after it’s dry.

However, being a Texas gal, I’m looking for volume.  You may have heard the phrase The higher the hair the closer to God  and trust me, many of us adhere to that notion religiously!  Serge Normant Dream Big Instant Volumizing Spray and Meta Lush Volumizer will give you the volume you need without any disappointment.  Meta Lush Volumizer is in liquid form and is sprayed onto damp hair before drying. Once dried, your hair will be fuller and ready to style.  Not full enough?  Add more volume with Dream Big Instant Volumizing Spray to your dry hair.  Many of us have used ‘dry shampoo’ to add volume.  This is even better for Day One and better, better on Day Two!  I love the smell of these products.  And!  As I mentioned when combined with the shampoo and conditioner your hair will feel amazing. Top it off with Meta Lux Hair Spray for a beautiful finish.  It smells wonderful with the addition of with echinacea, chamomile, and rosemary.

Serge Normant has set the standard for beautiful sexy, glamorous hair and as a New York celebrity hair stylist some of his favorite clients include Sarah Jessica Parker, Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts.  I don’t know about you but I would love to have hair like any of these beautiful women.  So, I dream big on a daily basis.  Julianne on Monday, Gwyneth on Tuesday and… well, you get the idea!

I Am NOT My Hair!

I am NOT my hair!  Period.  Exclamation mark (in bold type!) I am living in an area that’s seeing day upon day of rain, flash flooding, and humidity which I – nor my hair – have never experienced.  Even the extended forecast is like the week previous and the one before that, and next week’s 7-day forecast is the same.  Thunderstorms. Flash flooding. 100% humidity. Therefore, I have two choices.  Stay inside and watch the rain drops through the window pane or just deal with it.  And really?  Once you get the umbrella open (and if the wind doesn’t invert it) there are positives.  Your makeup stays dewy, your skin WELL hydrated  and it’s just your hair that takes on its own personality.

For weeks, I was looking into that mirror mirror on the wall. The reflection I saw was long, fine hair where months before during much drier days, I saw hair with volume (I’m in Texas, so volume is a must, right?)  But! I have found some great products that are helping me deal with the weather and my hair.  Pour a cup of coffee – let’s talk.

Beautiful hair on the outside really starts on the inside.  Think internal beauty.  Viviscal is making my fine hair fluffy in this weather – and I have learned fluffy is better than limp because it curls great!  Viviscal promotes existing hair growth from within and Jimmy Moreau, my amazing hair stylist/colorist at Crown Hair Salon in Highland Park, promises it won’t be long before he tells me to stop the growth. I smile. Viviscal contains Vitamin C, Niacin, Biotin and Iron.  It’s in tablet form and you can take up to two a day. And, yes, my hair is growing and it is thicker.

And! There’s more when it comes to inner beauty health.  Neocell Beauty Infusion is a collagen drink mix I was introduced to at Central Market.  It contains 6,000 mg of collagen, 50mg Hyaluronic acid, 3,000mcg Biotin, and Alpha Lipoic Acid plus Vitamin C. Great flavors include Cranberry, Appletini, and Tangerine Twist. I’ve learned the importance of incorporating beauty health on the inside and yes, I can see changes on the outside.

Mother Nature is always going to be in control when it comes to my hair.  I know at some point the rain and cool temps will become days filled sun and 100 degrees.  Again, my hair will be challenged but it is now healthy hair.  Armed with my 2 inch curling iron in one hand and my brush in the other, I can create full hair with volume.  So I smile – though I know I am still not my hair – yet!

It’s All About The Base

It’s all about the bass ‘bout the… base… So the song goes…. And! I have to tell you… I have been searching for the perfect eye shadow base for a long time.  I simply want a product that is easy to apply – especially when I have on my contacts and want it to keep my eye shadow in place(not sprinkled on my cheeks as the day goes on) and look just like it was applied. Too much?  Yes, there are things that contribute to the lasting effect, like the oil in our skin or maybe a little too much moisturizer but still I searched… until a few weeks ago. The good news is that I think I have found what I have been looking for and it came as a sample in the bottom of one of my Sephora bags. NARS Smudge Proof Eye Shadow Base has really been a welcomed surprised for me.  It is a lightweight primer that creates a seamless eye canvas that keeps my powder eye shadow looking fresh, and ‘just-applied’ all day.  It is ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested, too. Plus it has allowed me to maximize the look and intensity of my eye shadow and it lasts throughout the day without creasing and smudging. The true test will be a Texas summer, but for March I love what this new product offers.

If you have not used a primer as your eye shadow base before it’s a great addition to your makeup routine.  The base acts as a barrier between your eye shadow and eyelids and seals our oily skin or protects any oil our skin might produce from reaching your eye shadow.  This really ensures that it does not smudge or collect on the eye creases.  And! It makes your eye shadow last longer and keeps it from fading.  The applicator in NARS Smudge Proof Eye Shadow Base is a wand so you can spread the primer across you eye easily – even with your contacts on.  Gently apply the base on your upper eyelids. Don’t go crazy on the application. You need to apply only a single consistent layer and do not repeat on top of places you have already applied. For me, I wait for it to dry just a minute and then begin to apply my eye makeup. I must say that some makeup artists recommend applying eye shadow while it is still wet. It does give you a more dramatic effect so if you are going for ‘wow’ in your nighttime look. Wet is good. Try it both ways and see what works best for you is my suggestion. And if you have never tried a eye shadow base … do.  You will see a difference.

And now just a special note – if you are new to Wrinkle Me Not through the new Facebook Page, thank you for joining us here.  This blog is built on reviews from samples I have received that are a part of my bottomless beauty bag.  Some have been there a few weeks and others get used as soon as I snag one so I can share it with you.  I’m not paid for this blog in any way.  My passion for skin care knowledge coupled with my love of writing is what started this blog over a year ago.  I want to thank you for your encouraging messages both here and through the Facebook page. They inspire me!  So, let’s have fun learning about new products and those that are tried and true – together.  Keep smiling, too.  It keeps the lines away so we can declare Wrinkle Me Not!

Okay, I Admit It… I am TEXT Challenged

Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you I get the message across but it’s filled with errors…so, yeah, I am text challenged. I can blame it on my long nails, my lack of reading glasses at the moment, but I also blame SIRI. Can she not understand ‘Southern Drawl” Bless her heart?

But! When it comes to TEXTure, I know all the ends and outs and I have some favorites. How else can I survive in this Texas weather where the higher the hair the closer to God we are? No matter where you live you have to deal with humid conditions and if you like your hair full (or BIG in Texas) there are products you can apply after shampooing that will help you achieve just that.

Now that the humidity is lowering with the cool temps, I wanted to share two texture favorites with you. Infra Texture by CHI and Joico’s Power Whip. There’s a trick I learned several years ago when it comes to application. Layer your products. If you apply all of these at once you are going to have a sticky mess and when dry you might see yourself as the cartoon characters who sticks his finger in a light socket…So, do this – After towel drying your hair put an egg sized ball of Power Whip into the palm of your hand and run it through your hair. This will perform liked whipped foam (mousse) when it comes to texture. Blow dry into your favorite style. Then, take the CHI Infra Texture and spray it through your hair – like a hairspray and run your hands through your hair. You can use it as a hair spray as well so when you have the need to freshen up your style during the day you hair is full and full of texture for that night-time ‘do’.

Now if I could only learn to text and texture at the same time…hmmm…. Oh …SIRI??

We all want to feel pretty from the tip of our heads to the bottom of our heels. Why else would there be hair salons and nail/ pedicures boutiques on almost every corner? And speaking of hair like the musical says “I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy, shaggy, …shining, gleaming, steaming…..down to here, down to there…” Unless it’s a rainy day then we want a big hat right?
Over the last month I’ve been trying different shampoo/conditioners on my fine limp hair to see which ones I liked in different weather conditions. Except for a few cloudy days here and there, we have had hot humid Texas weather all summer long, so think ‘moist’ when it comes to conditions.
My four product choices were Living Proof No Frizz, Bamboo Anti-Frizz, Serge Normant Meta Silk and Aveda’s Invati. As you can tell from the names they all take care of the frizz/curls that hot humid days can produce. I really liked each one for different reasons. Also, I think the variety in shampoos produces better results so my hair was surprised as well… and I am more in control of it, too.
Living Proof Shampoo definitely works on the most humid days. I also used Living Proof No Frizz Weightless Styling Spray which created a somewhat weightless shield on my hair that helped to block humidity on one particular day. Want no frizz and full? I used AMP by Living Proof to achieve the fullness. A little goes a long way on this product. It’s creamy and white so you put a little in your hands and rub together until the white becomes clear. Run your hands through your hair and ‘wa-la’ you have added volume and some height on top without any teasing!
Bamboo Anti Frizz products are wonderful as well. After only a week’s use, my hair condition improved. My hair was indeed sleek and silky, and, especially important for my kind of hair, moisturized. My ends no longer looked like they were going to split any minute. I should also mention the high shine factor. My hair reflected light as if it was recently colored. There is a coating feel to your hair after washing and whatever this coating is, it stayed in my hair after washing with a different shampoo the next week!
Serge Normant Meta Silk was a surprise. I received it as a sample with some beauty products I had purchased at Nordstrom. I absolutely fell in love with this shampoo the first time I tried it. My hair felt so soft and looked vibrant and full. This shampoo really moisturized and helped seal my ends as well. It is sulfate free which is essential for anyone who wants beautiful healthy hair. It also did not fade my color-treated hair as other shampoos can do.
And finally, Invati Shampoo – amazing! This product does all that it promises and more. I will say this is a treatment-type shampoo, so I know over time there will be improvement in my hair if used consistently. It is a low sudsing shampoo, too, so adding more and more product just wastes it. Just work it through your hair and rinse. You will be surprised with the end result. The Invati line is different and I am so happy that I decided to try it. If you have issues with fine hair or hair loss try this product. I know that you will not be disappointed.

Bad hair day? Wear a smile – it’s an inexpensive way to change your looks. Unknown

Hey Pretty Woman!

So…I have been testing a few products on my hair recently. I’m the girl with fine limp hair they show on TV as the “before look”… most of the time. I don’t get the ‘after’ look too often unless the humidity is really low… and that is not ever going to happen during a Dallas summer. But! I have found two product lines that I am really liking on Day One and Day Two.
Serge Normant Meta Silk Shampoo and Conditioner is for all hair types including color and chemically treated hair. It is sulfate-free and fortifies your hair with Keravis – which I have learned is a vegetable protein that increases hair strength. The conditioner – which I usually shy away from using except on the ends– is weightless and is a combo of more protein and botanical oils. Honestly following a blow dry only, my hair it is amazingly full and bouncy and feels great to the touch. The shampoo I must tell you does not lather a lot… I think that’s where the ‘fullness’ feature comes into play.
Visiting with Jimmy Moreau, my savvy hair colorist and stylist, last week he tells me Serge Normant is a world renowned hair stylist for stars like Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as supermodels Gisele Bundchen, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford. I don’t think he’s got any more talent than Jimmy, but I really do like his hair products.
The shampoo and conditioner are also available in Meta Blonde, a color intensifying shampoo and a hydrating, color enhancing conditioner. I noticed the blonde pigments in the product enhanced my hair color so I tried that as well since my hair is a highlighted light brown. It really perked up my hair color and added a slight golden touch to it.
And! The Meta Lush Volumizer with Extracts of Nopal and Cedar Bark provides more protein to your hair which in turn strengthens the hair and the vitamins included will improve the shine and manageability. If you color your hair, you will be happy to know it also contains UV absorber which will also protect your color and keep it from fading.
I purchased my products from Nordstrom and the line is also available at Neiman Marcus. The shampoo and conditioner are packaged in two different sizes which I really like. If you are not sure, try the smaller size and move up to the larger one if you like what it does to your hair.
Then maybe you, too, can be Cindy Crawford or Julia Roberts for a day or two… or more.
