Hey There Bright Eyes!

Watching the news for 30 minutes is tough these days.  Not only is the news sad and discouraging, so are the all ads!  The evening news is the worst as we hear everything that could or will go wrong with our bodies as we age.  Depressing!

But there is a BRIGHT spot.  When it comes to skincare we are winners!

As we all know developing eyelid wrinkles is common as we age.  And!  As in anything else we do genetics can also play a role in developing our wrinkles especially on our face and around our eyes. Ugh!

I am so thankful we have such wonderful skincare available to us to help lessen the effects of what I call ‘creases’ in our skin.  I never liked the word wrinkles.  When I was a teenager I had to do a lot of ironing for my mom and I always envisioned I was removing wrinkles in the pillow cases! Creases were on our face!  Oh those were the days!

Modifying lifestyle factors, such as exposure to cigarette smoke and harmful sun rays, reduce our risk for developing these creases. Of course, the decreased production of natural oil in our skin as we age makes the eyelid skin appear more wrinkled. Repeating facial expressions around the eyes also leaves fine lines and wrinkles. As a result, skin loses flexibility and has a difficult time returning to its place.

It’s time to rethink certain habits, such as always drinking with a straw (wrinkles around the mouth) or squinting because you forgot your sunglasses (crow’s feet). The skin around your eyes is thin and delicate, making it more prone to those awful creases!  Try to avoid pulling, tugging or stretching that skin each night and choose makeup products that go on and come off easily. As a contact lens wearer I have learned to be cautious not to tug too hard on my eyelid skin when putting in my lenses as well.

“When your eyes look younger, your entire face appears more youthful”. That is the tag line Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare has attached to their new eye cream and serum and honestly I have to agree totally.  C+Collagen Brighten + Firm Eye Cream and Serum.  The super hero eye duo!

I picked up these jewels at the Trend Show last month with Karen and I must say this energizing eye cream which is infused with vitamin C complex dramatically improves the look of tired, aging eyes. It instantly works on fine lines and eye creases and brightens dark circles. I use it after my Alpha Beta Peel Pads and Glow Pads when my skin is clean and ready for treatments.

I apply it in the morning and at night. This super duo can be used around the eye in the orbital area too.  I would suggest however doing the whole eye at night and then under eye only in the morning. When I applied the cream over the whole eye in the morning it did affect my eye makeup.  So just a word of caution if you wear eye makeup like me, use this at night only! Then you can wake up and be amazed at the transformation in your… uh creases – or lack of!

As a side note – Jimmy recently told me about a really cool Beauty App from Sephora.  You can do virtual makeovers and when you find one you like, click on the products and put them in your cart!  I went to Sephora and had the Beauty Stylist apply the products on me and wow! I love this cool way to shop! Great idea Sephora! ** (Then quickly grab your phone and take a selfie while you look fabulous!)

50 Shades of Glow

There may be 50 shades of grey, but I can assure you the same goes for most other colors out there as well.  And, really?  Who wants to be grey when spring is in the air and we have such luscious colors from which to choose from head to toe?

With the arrival of the Merry Month of May, it’s time to get your glow factor going!  Just last week, my friend, Laura, was asking me about tanning options as she prepares for a trip to my favorite place, Napa Valley.  So, I gave her my favorite glow product in my beauty bag in addition to my favorite wineries, too!

My main “go-to” product for an all over glow is Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads.  There is a pad made for your face and décolleté as well as one for your body (which is actually a towel).  These pads are infused with active Vitamin D which gives your face and your body a truly believable natural looking color.  You will notice the pads are odorless and produce a streak free color and with a combination of alpha and beta hydroxyl acids they penetrate the skin to exfoliate, tighten the pores and produce an even glow both on your body and on your face.  They are an essential product in my weekly beauty routine during the warmer months, but the facial pads are a staple in my beauty bag as I love to have glow going year round.

These pads can be used whenever you choose, however I usually apply the pads to my face and body following my bath.  Application is so easy.  Just wipe!  Be sure and cover all of your neck and your ears, too.  And!  If you want a darker shade just increase the number of times you go over your face/body with your towel. A word of caution, however – wash your hands thoroughly after use.  This product begins to produce results almost immediately and you won’t want those ‘tell tell’ tanning signs on your palms. Then, I wait about 5 minutes and apply my nighttime moisturizer.  The color is long lasting as well – usually about 7 days.  I have other glow favorites that I use throughout the summer, but I must say, this is my all time favorite!

So turn your face to the sun and let anything grey be only the shadows that fall behind you then you can be as radiant as the sun and glow!

By the way, I’m wearing the smile you gave me. ~Author Unknown

Ready, Set, Get Your Tan On!

Okay, so you didn’t make it to the beach for Spring Break this year and you are still ‘as white as those slacks you wanted to wear back to work since it is technically spring. NO PROBLEM, I’ve got your back, my friend.  I did make a trip to Corpus Christi with all the Spring Breakers, but I, too, never got to the beach.  Regardless, I did visit J. Gail’s Salon in Dallas for an air brush tan before “leaving on a jet plane” so I could wear my sun dress and show a little skin like the rest of the crowd.

J. Gail’s offers tanning packages as one of many services at her salon. I buy a package each year and then visit her salon once a month during the spring and summer.  As they say, if you can’t tone it – tan it!  I couldn’t have said it better.

The air brush formula here is by Soleil, which I have found lasts about 2 weeks and is a beautiful, natural color.  As the color begins to fade into that third week, I keep the color updated with the Dr. Dennis Gross Glow Pads I have mentioned in previous posts.  It works, I promise!

To prepare for your air brush tanning experience, you should exfoliate your entire body, paying special attention to the knees, ankles, toes and elbows. If you plan on shaving, I would do it 6 to 8 hours prior to your tanning session and body waxing should be
done 24 hours prior to your appointment. Do not apply moisturizers, make-up or deodorant prior to your appointment. These may affect the way your skin will absorb the tanning solution and will cause uneven fading.

When you go to the salon for your session the general rule is wear nothing “white” and nothing “tight.” Plan on leaving the salon wearing sandals and loose fitting clothing.  This will prevent the risk of rubbing your skin before your tan has set. I usually bring a sun dress and leave wearing only that and a pair of flip flops so nothing is touching my body, and that means no bra and panties – just walk quickly to your car – sunglasses on and head bowed.  No one will know!

During the tanning session you may wear whatever you feel comfortable with – a swim suit, your bra and panties or nothing at all.  It’s your choice!  Once your tan has been air brushed you will need to wait 6-8 hours before showering. This gives the solution adequate time to react with your skin and deepen in color.

The first two hours are critical to the success of your tan. Avoid skin contact to prevent the tanning solution from rubbing off onto your palms, and avoid activities that will cause you to perspire excessively. After a minimum of 6 to 8 hours you can take a post-tan shower and then moisturize your skin. This will help set and maintain the length of your tan. I usually wait until morning to bathe.  Yes, the water will be brown, but it’s not your tan, just the bronzing agent that has been used in the applicator.  Always, always moisturize!

Long hot baths, hot tubs, chlorine and saltwater will affect the depth of your tan.  When I swim during the summer I am very careful with the length of time I am in the water and I always pat myself dry rather than rubbing. I will usually see a lightening of my ‘tan’ following a swim, so I usually touch up with my Glow Pads if I notice too much of a change.

Being a native Texan I want the look of a tan without the risk of the sun on my skin.  Soliel provides a beautiful airbrushed color for me.  There are other brands available, so when looking at a salon service find out what solution they are using and ask how long it lasts.

This has been a harsh winter in so many ways, especially on our skin.  Go ahead and get those white slacks and tops out of your closet… it’s time for us to glow and now you, too, know how!
