Jimmy Days

Anyone that knows me knows I think I have the best hairstylist/colorist in my city.  He has been a part of my life for over 21 years so we share many memories and fun times – besides hair!

Jimmy is actually the person, along with Enrique Starnes-Ortega, Senior Account Executive with Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare, that encouraged me to start my path on beauty blogging several years ago.  Jimmy Moreau is a Color Specialist, Stylist & Make Up Artist at The Crown Salon in Dallas.  My visits with him consist of conversations regarding friends, family or favorite TV shows that we love and then we move on to the the world of beauty – skincare, make-up, and hair.  We have been through so much together but one of the best memories is my first highlighting appointment.  Even though we were watching the weather, it surprised us both that a tornado had touched down in Ft. Worth and was heading our way!  Jimmy remained calm and the bleach, though slow to process, was still quicker than the tornado that followed me home. Ahhh Memories!  LOL

My first visit to Jimmy in 1996 was from a referral from a mom at the high school my daughter attended.  Her hair was beautiful and I had admired it for several years.  So at the concession stand during halftime of a high school football game I walked up to her and told her how much I admired her hair.  And within a week I had my first appointment with Jimmy.  I sat down in the styling chair at Montana’s which happens to be in Texas (go figure!) and Jimmy looked over my color-treated dark permed hair and he said “You can either continue to cover the grey or, you can stop perming your hair. You cannot do both” – and my world, as I knew it, tilted.  But here I am today, with highlighted hair, long, straight, no perm, and little tease, and I love the look.

Bottom line we can all change.  Our hairstyles, our attitude about life and others, our favorite foods and our favorite products. It’s part of life and life is great as long as we don’t sweat the small stuff and that includes frizzy hair!

As you know, I test products all the time through skincare, makeup, and hair.  And I am constantly asking questions.  I recently saw my friend, Pamela Morgan, National Makeup Artist with YSL, who has the amazing job of traveling the world making women beautiful. We were at a recent Trend Show together in May and I text her after she got home.  It was a dreary day in Dallas, but she not only looked fabulous as always, but so did her hair.  “What are you using, I asked??” and she sent me the info I needed.  Being from Los Angeles and living Orlando she said Kendra 25 Hair Spray works the best for humidity.  And now Kendra Hair Spray is part of my hair product drawer, too.

Bottom line listen to your “Jimmy” in your life.  It will show in your hair… and your smile!

Primers and a Virtual Trip To Sephora

There are so many products on the market today to make your eyelashes grow long. And even longer.  And there are even more that make you brows either fill in or grow thicker as well.  I have tried several of them over the last 20 years and I will tell you that a few of them have worked so well that they carry the ‘wow’ factor to a whole new level.  But!  In saying that, I must also add they carry a pretty hefty price point.  Then the disappointment comes when you no longer want pay the price and what you have achieved disappears at the stroke of midnight.  Much like with Cinderella – the ‘pumpkin’ ie. your long lush lashes and sexy eyebrows are no more.

So, I smile as I give you a little tidbit I learned at the Dior counter a few weeks ago from the Beauty Product Specialist.   Remember the Diorshow Maximizer 3D Triple Volume Plumping Lash Primer we discussed in a previous post?

This mascara base from Dior gives your lashes up to three times the volume by combining the immediate enhancing effect of a mascara with the benefits of daily lash care. Your lashes are left intensely curled, thickened and lengthened, ideally primed to heighten the effect of mascara and optimize hold. Day after day, its enhancing formula helps lashes look their best by combining hyaluronic acid with plumping properties and the brand’s unrivalled Lash Maximizer™ ingredient. It’s white so you use it first and follow with your favorite mascara which for me is DiorShow.

Plus, I learned that not only is it great as a primer it’s can also be applied as an intensive deep conditioner for lashes and brows at night. These are two uses for optimal results.  I apply each day before mascara for immediate results, and on its own each night as a deep conditioner to pamper my lashes and my brows.  You will be surprised at the results.  And even better, the price points compared to the other products I used are much lower.

And! Another tidbit I received was from my amazing hair stylist and color specialist, Jimmy Moreau.  If you have not added the Sephora app to your phone, do it!  Inside the app Sephora has created is an exact replica of its chain cosmetic store. There are dozens of rows of every imaginable kind of makeup, surrounded by walls of perfume, skin cream, and beauty gadgets. Everything is there – on your phone!

This is Sephora’s new Innovation Lab. Right when you walk in the front of the virtual store, there’s an array of augmented reality videos that play on the Sephora app on your smartphone. Continue through the store and these reality background videos will pop up strategically throughout.

Be sure and visit virtually reality makeovers.  With the addition of your camera you can view yourself in a variety of makeup looks.  See one you love?  Click and your cart fills with the products to achieve it.  And!  If you don’t want everything you can sort and delete those in your cart and then purchase.  There are even tutorials available to show you how to achieve the look as well.  I spent a rainy afternoon playing with everything this app offers and had such fun.  Trust me, you will too.

Just have fun. Smile.  And keep putting on lipstick. – Facia

It’s All About The Seal

My Saturday visits to my hair guru, Jimmy Moreau at Crown Hair Salon in Highland Park, are always enjoyable.  We cover the gamut on a variety of topics whether it’s TV episodes or new restaurants; but always, always we discuss skincare and makeup trends – those current and on the horizon.  Jimmy has been doing my hair for almost 20 years so we have seen many ideas come and go – including my many hair styles!

On my last visit Jimmy asked me if I knew what it took to get the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval since it’s on a variety of items including beauty products.  I actually did not, so I Googled it like we do everything these days.  Did you know that Good Housekeeping bestows its limited warranty seal on products that have only been evaluated by the Good Housekeeping Institute?  Each product has been assessed to perform as intended meaning if it says it removes dark spots, it does indeed do it.

So I searched beauty products at the Good Housekeeping site.  Wow!  There are so many, too many.  In fact, it would have taken me an entire day to go through the list since the products are broken down into what category interests you.  For instance, if you want to soften the lines around your mouth – one of the product recommended is Murad’s Invisiblur, which we discussed in an earlier post.  It’s got the seal!  Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara has been around for years.  Why?  It’s got a great price point and yes, the Good Housekeeping Seal!  Two of my favorite mascaras, YSL’s Everlong Mascara and Dior Show Blackout are on the list as well.  They give the Best Moisturizer award to Chanel’s Ultra Correct and another product with a great price point – Olay’s Definity Deep Penetrating Foaming UV Moisturizer Night Cream.  L’Oreal’s Advance Revitalift and Olay’s Professional ProX Eye Cream are also on the list and both have great price points, too.

As you can see from this very small sampling there are a wide range of products which carry the Good Housekeeping Seal, so you might want to check their site before you buy if this seal is important to you.  I will add that many of my favorite beauty items that I know work well for me are not on this list.  So, I also learned that not all products are submitted by the manufacturers to Good Housekeeping for review.

Remember you can visit your favorite department store and ask a Beauty Advisor for some recommendations for you, too.  And, there you have the added option of lunch with a friend along with some shopping time, too!
